(597) 1846 - Stampless Letter-Condition: Excellent Folded to 3" by 5" size. This stampless letter is dated 1846. It is written on blue paper, and the outer paper has the address, with cancelation stamps (not postage stamps). The letter is one page long. It was sent to : Charnley & Whelen in Philadelphia, Penn. The letter is one page long and mentions that their favor of 27th was duly received, with it enclosure of dft on NY for $23.00, net proceeds of Feb. Then it mentions other funds, and holding the power of attorney. Is is signed by a E.C. Herrick, from New Haven. The firm of Charnley and Whelen was started in 1835 by Edward S. Charnley and Townshend Whelen, which continued in to the 1840's. Private papers from Charnley and Whelen are held at the University of Michigan in the Israel Whelen Collection. E.C. Herrick was a Yale Astronomer and Librarian. There is an existing letter from and author in May 1, 1846 that thanked E.C. Herrick for allowing him to use the Yale library for research for his book entitled, "The Revolutionary Incidents of Queens County". He also wrote several articles on the biology of local pest insects in the 1840's. Mr. Herrick was also known as being the first person to suspect that the Perseid Meteor Shower was an annual event (1837). Mr. Herrick seems to be a multi-talented gentleman.
